California earthquake stages "duck, cover and hold 'drill with million participants

Most practicing "drop, cover and hold" technique recommended during actual movement. Including about 650,000 students in the Los Angeles Unified School District, LAUSD spokesman Tom Waldman.

In a Target store in Northridge, employees and customers hit the ground and fled when the earthquake drill was announced at 10:20 am

The goal is to empower people to protect themselves effectively as the earth is shaking, avoiding actions as out of the race, which exposes people from falling debris and glass exterior walls of buildings. Experts also hope to dispel misconceptions, such as trying to seek the safety of standing in a doorway.

Besides the drop in drilling, emergency services and hospitals performed more elaborate exercises, including search and rescue missions and mass casualty exercises.

The exercise, now in its fourth edition, is designed to help residents prepare for a major earthquake. Although California is the most seismically active state in the 48, the State has not suffered a metropolitan scale disaster since the 1994 Northridge earthquake that killed 72 people, injured thousands and caused $ 25 billion in damage to the region of Los Angeles.

Authorities urged individuals and families to stock a first aid kit and make sure you have enough food and water to last at least 72 hours.
